Local radio station talk show hosts Mike Shanin and Scott Parks have decided to censor stories concerning 2008 Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul. On the air this afternoon, the pair suggested that they would require a 1500 signature petition to be hand-delivered to their studio for them to lift the ban on Dr. Paul. They started by mentioning a somewhat threatening email they received from an individual in Virginia. This email suggested that they cover Ron Paul or else risk the wrath of angry Paul supporters. Each time they mentioned his name on the air, it was bleeped out as if it were a curse word. At one point, they snickered to each other when one of them mentioned Ron Paul's name and the name was not censored, as if they accidently let it slip. They attempted to marginalize Dr. Paul by implying that there is only a small, radical group of Dr. Paul supporters, and his supporters are basically akin to tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists.
The hosts then went on to suggest that a petition be started, which would require 1500 hand-written signatures of Dr. Paul backers and was limited geographically to just the Kansas City metro area. They suggested that they would need to scrutinize the handwriting to verify that the signatures are real, implying that signatures would need to be forged to reach the 1500 goal. Shanin suggested that the signatures should be delivered in person to their Westwood studios, to which Parks suggested that maybe they should just mail them in, because Dr. Paul's fan base are nuts.
The "Shanin and Parks" radio show airs weekdays from 4pm - 7pm CST on KMBZ. The pair are known locally as being conservative in their views, and so is KMBZ as evidenced by their mostly conservative lineup of programs. According to Wikipedia, "The station now carries Limbaugh's nationally syndicated show along with those of Bill O'Reilly, Neal Boortz, and Mark Levin as well as local hosts Mike Shanin & Scott Parks and Darla Jaye... Rush Limbaugh got his start in political commentary on the station in 1993."
Shanin and Parks recently did a show on the air where they suggested that there are no true conservatives in the field of Republican candidates. They went on to suggest that Fred Thompson should join the race, because he could carry the conservative mantle like Ronald Reagan. Dr. Paul's name was never mentioned.
In a 2005 op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, conservative icon Rush Limbaugh outlined his views on what it means to be a conservative. Limbaugh says:
We are confident in our principles and energetic about openly advancing them. We believe in individual liberty, limited government, capitalism, the rule of law, faith, a color-blind society and national security.
We support school choice, enterprise zones, tax cuts, welfare reform, faith-based initiatives, political speech, homeowner rights and the war on terrorism.
And at our core we embrace and celebrate the most magnificent governing document ever ratified by any nation — the U.S. Constitution. Along with the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes our God-given natural right to be free, it is the foundation on which our government is built and has enabled us to flourish as a people.
With the exception of the "War on Terrorism" and federally funded faith-based initiatives, Limbaugh's definition is almost point for point in line with Ron Paul's views and voting record. And, these views are also very much like the views frequently espoused on the Shanin and Parks show. According to Ron Paul's official campaign site, ronpaul2008.com,
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
Of course, these claims are easily verified by an examination of Dr. Paul's voting record and fit the ideals of classic conservate thought. So, it becomes ironic and fascinating that the KMBZ radio show's hosts would choose to censor a candidate whose views are frequently similar to their own. And, it is interesting that there are now attempts being made to censor Ron Paul from the debates, and that these attempts are being made by high level members of the Republican Party. GOPAC chair Michael Steele suggested on Fox News after the debate that the Republican Party should winnow the field of candidates allowed in the debates to include only the major top tier candidates. Fox News anchors made multiple suggestions that Paul's campaign was finished. The idea being perpetuated in the media is that Ron Paul is a fringe candidate. But, these attempts to undermine Dr. Paul's strong grass roots support lie in sharp contrast to the results of Fox News text messaging poll. The poll asked viewers to text their favorite candidate. When Sean Hannity first announced the poll results, Ron Paul was at 30% and was in first, followed closely by Mitt Romney. By the conclusion of the voting, Romney overtook Paul and the final results were 29% for Romney and 25% for Paul. The results were quickly dismissed by the Fox analysts as the work of a small group of organized Paul supporters and that the results were not scientific.
There is an online petition to sign that will be sent to GOPAC and the RNC in an effort to keep Ron Paul in the debates.
http://www.petitiononline.com/r0npau1/petition.html
Here is an excerpt from the petition:
"William F. Buckley recently stated that the Republican Party’s very existence is in danger. This new neo-con attack on our electoral process is treasonous and if not reversed, will cause a further mass exodus from the party."
Voice your support for Ron Paul and a return to traditional conservative values by signing the online petition and contacting the RNC.
Call the RNC now at 1-202-863-8500
If you live in the Kansas City area, start a petition, get as many signatures as you can, and then mail them to KMBZ. Tell Mike Shanin and Scott Parks that they are wrong.

This is an excellent article. Another blogger reminded us that Time magazine's person of the year was "YOU" meaning the internet users shaping the world as we are. Now suddenly we're ignored? How long you reckon that'll last?
Well, get the petition signed then.
The KC-area Ron Paul Support Team has a meetup scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in Overland Park. I don't know if they are responding to this KMBZ-AM challenge, but that might be a good group to coordinate one.
The phony conservatives really are getting scared of Ron Paul's surge in popularity. Perhaps they'd better do some job hunting before it gets too late!
This is all about the First Amendment. After all, censorship is becoming America's favorite past-time. The US gov't (and their corporate friends), already detain protesters, ban books like "America Deceived" from Amazon and Wikipedia America Deceived (book), shut down Imus and fire 21-year tenured, BYU physics professor Steven Jones because he proved explosives, thermite in particular, took down the WTC buildings. Free Speech forever. We'll cover Ron Paul, let the MSM cover Paris Hilton in jail.
God willing, let there be 10,000 KC signatures presented to those DJ clowns. Then what will they say??
I'm signing the petition and sending it from Ca.
I don't understand how someone in the United States can censor the legitimate views of anyone in congress, they are obviously there b/c they know what they are doing... right?
If they don't support his views along with everyone elses, they are in a sense anti-american, or at least anti-democratic republic.
BUT, the censorship of the man's name is completely disrespectful in more than one way AND unconstitutional.
People like Osama Bin Ladin, who are mentioned on a daily bases have done FAR more wrong than Ron Paul and his views...
There is an obvious reason. United States and it's big business FEAR Ron Paul.
RON PAUL 2008
It's a small point but it's "Westwood studio" (as in Westwood, Kansas) and not "Westwood One" (which is a radio network). I wish I would have known about the meetup! And speaking about the 1,500 signatures thing: let's get volunteers out at Wal-Marts, Targets, shopping malls, grocery stores, etc with slogans like "Don't let KMBZ silence political speech!" This alone would wake up a lot of sheeple who don't have a clue what's going on in the world and don't realize who Ron Paul is.
I don't live in KC, but .... if I did ;)
I'll be damned if I would take orders from some radio lacky's ... "go get a petition" ... screw you buddy.
If I DID get a petition togeteher it would be for the purpose of going to their competitors and saying look at all these people who will comit to listenting to your show if you just promise to give "fair" coverage to Ron Paul.
I suspect you might have 2 stations readily accepting Ron Paul calls ;)
Here is a link to a downloadable petition template for use with Microsoft Word.

I actually think that this would have a greater effect if lots of us started our own petitions and gathered signatures to mail or deliver them separately.
The insinuation by Shanin and Parks yesterday on air was that they doubted that there are that many people that support Ron Paul.
Just a thought.
If someone starts a more formal petition, please post the details here.
Call the sponsors of this pitiful pair of disc spinners and advise the sponsors you will not be purchasing their products and/or services as long as they sponsor this sort of anti- Ron Paul programming.
The producer's name and e-mail is
Matt Elder at melder@entercom.com .
The disc spinner's e-mail is
ShaninandParks@kmbz.com .
Look, this petition nonsense is just a ploy to give their radio spot salesman or saleswoman more stats to sell to potential sponsors about their listenership.
I think a nice long boycott would be more useful.
Great article.
Can someone tell me their hours. I'd love to be one of hundreds of people calling in next time they're on the air.
-Chad
The show airs weekdays from 4pm -7pm central standard time. That is about an hour from now.
There are two petitions, one from Alex with over 8,000 signatures and another original one with over 11,000 signatures.
I think now that the MI GOP has dropped its push to ban him, calling this station would be best.
I'm not going to say that PetitionOnline.com is filtering petition submissions, but I tried to create the following petition and it didn't work (server not available -- but only on the "create petition" command):
Dear Shanin and Parks,
Don't silence discussion about Ron Paul or ask callers not to bring up his name, especially since he's won the feedback and opinion polls after the first two debates. There is a long time and a lot of campaigning to go before the first primary votes are cast and to say that Ron Paul is a "nobody" suggest that you're simply not paying attention to the news. You should leave it up to the callers and to decide if Dr. Paul is a worthy topic for discussion (especially since you both recently made the comment that there isn't a single, truly conservative candidate in the race -- if you want conservative, Dr. Paul is your man).
If someone else can manage to get something created, please post a link here. I live in KC and will sign a petition -- and bring ten people with me!
If you call in today, be sure to tell the screeners that you are calling to discuss whatever lame issue they are discussing. If you get on the air, then hammer the point home! Good luck!
Also, Sean Hannity is still on air. Make sure to let him know how you feel as well, since he is playing patriotic songs and talking about how we are the land of the free. He has also been talking about the illegal immigration problem and the amnesty plan being discussed.
It's time to start calling KMBZ. 913-576-7798 or *980 on your cell phones.
I have never seen an more outright attempt to marginalize a candidate who has broad appeal across the political spectrum. Not because he is a conservative, but because he speaks the truth. Perhaps you should start a boycott of the show's sponors.
Hello, my name is Valek and I am the creator and organizer of the Kansas City Area Ron Paul Support Team. Join us if you are interested: http://ronpaul.meetup.com/43/
We now have 34 members in less than a week, 14 RSVP'd "Yes", and 13 RSVP'd "Maybe" so we could have up to 27 people attend the first meet up!
This Ron Paul blog page is great! I just subscribed to it. Keep up the good work! I listen to Shanin and Park once in a while, but it is difficult to listen to a full show without being bored to tears. I used to listen to Jerry Agar, and even though Jerry Agar was also a neo-con, he was much better than Shanin and Parks. I heard
a little bit of Shanin and Parks today, and I heard a guy on the air mention the first Meet Up at Borders book store(91ST & Metcalf) that we are going to have tommorrow (Saturday) at 2PM, I
was excited when I heard that! Who ever said that on the air, thank you! I've heard Shanin and Parks talk about Ron Paul before, and they always have something derogatory to say about him. I don't get it, they call themselves conservative, but they won't support the most conservative man in our government. Ron Paul received an endorsement from Pat Buchanan, it doesn't get any more conservative than that! Shanin and Parks are two pathetic
lemming neo-cons who seriously need a wake up call, and a
lesson in real conservatism and I will be happy to give them
that lesson. I will bring this issue up at our first meet up. I
will gladly hand those two pathetic neo-cons 1,500 signatures! It's really sad that the neo-cons have turned conservatism into a degenerate predatory money worshipping, war mongering, zoinist controlled, unAmerican, unConstitutional, perverted filth machine! Ron Paul is our only hope for a return to authentic conservative principles, and moral values! Stay strong and keep up the fight, with our help Ron Paul will win!
How about going after the propagandists talk show sponsors with a petition, boycott, protests, etc? Works lots of times. Better than giving a petition to these two commie nuts so they can have a good time verbally tearing them up.
hey valek my name is chad and i will be there tommorrow, although i think instead of gathering signatures for their petition we should tell people what they are doing and to not listen to their show. to hell with them and their stupid show, also should send notice to the fcc for discrimination and censorship.
Come on Chad, it's a private radio station, they can talk about who or what they want.
I think the idea to get a petition for "full coverage" is great idea, since it technically fulfills the requirement, but isn't actually what they were asking for.
you might be able to stretch an other entire round back and forth if you can gather 1500 signature (that's not that hard, as I'm sure Most die-hard LP members can attest.
This is free publicity! This is priceless publicity! This early in the cycle, to have so many people even knowing the name is a miracle.
Ron is moving up in the latest Zogby polls (Just 3%, but it's 3 times more than Tommy Thompson) and 3 times more than he had 2 weeks ago.
Why bother with this station? Who cares what they are doing.. they are not even a blip on the horizon as far as importance.
The station is not important, but the opportunity could still prove valuable.
I'm thinking that perhaps, though they wanted a petition of supporters, it could be a petition signed by everyone who agrees with what is said in the petition. The wording suggested by Mike sounds great, and it could be signed by everyone.
We could go door to door and ask people to sign it. There are also the files online for a Ron Paul brochure. If we printed up brochures, and gave them to the people we were asking to sign, so they could see who Ron Paul was, it might even help build support.
Face it, this is one of the more populated areas of Kansas, so this would be a great place to gain supporters.
I wouldn't bother begging them to discuss Ron Paul. Stop listening to their station or supporting their sponsors. Let the station and the sponsors know why.
Since when is silencing dissent "conservative"? Heck with them.
My guess is that this name blocking is crazy like a fox. Another words, they are giving a local flavor, knowing it will generate national attention... and get Ron Paul's name on the national scene. Thanks guys. Ron Paul for President '08

We are the Ron Paul volunteers in Kansas City. We are working feverishly on this petition. Help us, and join us when we turn it in! All you need is names and signatures on a piece of paper, with Ron Paul and either 1500 Signature Petition or such on it. I will collect it on Wednesday night, just email me when/where.

The Ron Paul Kansas CIty Volunteer Team now has a Blog and Discussion Forum: http://www.ronpaulkc.com
The ban has been lifted, and our Media Contact, Ben, got a 15 minute segment on the show. We have people in our meetgroup now that found out about Ron Paul because of the show. Even when you disagree with people be polite. It makes you look good, and helps gather people to our banner. When you call into shows, be polite and proffesional! It worked for us.

I left a comment on their site:
"Your censorship of Dr. Ron Paul is disgusting, offensive, and un-American.
It's also ignorant and wrong.
Dr. Ron Paul has more honor and integrity than ALL the other candidates combined. I doubt you people have any.
Regarding Ron Paul:
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war."
how about you just start a petition and have 1500 sign it saying they will no longer listen to the show, period.
